Russian WWII Aircraft Hangar Near Nome
Did you know the Soviets were in Alaska during World War II? Oh, yes... they were part of the Allied Forces, and Alaska was a U.S. territory at the time, so the United States let the Soviet Union have a presence in Alaska to defend against the Japanese. In fact, the U.S. military suspected the Japanese would attack either Alaska or Hawaii, with such a preference for Alaska that millions of dollars were spent building the Alaskan Highway from Seattle through Canada and into Alaska. Although the Alaskan Highway was never used to supply and defend Alaska from a Japanese invasion, it did help establish much-needed infrastructure.
