Kotzebue School System
Per square foot, Kotzebue High School's construction costs were higher than any other public school in the United States. This isn't surprising considering the freight costs of materials and equipment and the engineering challenge of suspending all that weight on permafrost. Note the high school doesn't use the underground anhydrous ammonia pipe system to keep the permafrost frozen. By suspending the entire structure several feet above the ground on stilts, heat from the building escapes into the atmosphere instead of melting and destabilizing the permafrost.
The text below "Kotzebue High School" reads "Home of the Fighting Huskies." What I've been trying to figure out ever since is what other high schools are around for them to fight with?
June Nelson Elementary School uses the more common anhydrous ammonia pipe system to stabilize the permafrost.
