Susitna Flats State Game Refuge
![]() |
The Susitna Flats State Game Refuge encompasses 300,000 acres surrounding the Susitna and Little Susitna River deltas. The landscape you see here is representative of the entire refuge: swampy muskegs, meandering streams, lowlands, mud, some trees and oilwells. I assume the game animals to be found here are salmon and waterfowl - land-bound creatures would have difficulty negotiating such an area. There's even a campground, but don't forget to pack mosquito repellant!
The body of water at the top of the picture is a combination of the Cook Inlet and mudflats; the river snaking in and out of the picture and through the muskegs is the Little Susitna; the Susitna River splits into three streams that combine into two streams forming a large delta - its picture didn't make the cut for this website and it isn't visible in the photo. Our plane was 12-15 miles WNW of Anchorage on its way to Kotzebue.
