Howard Farley and the Iditarod

This is Howard Farley. He, his wife and their kennel of Siberian Husky sled dogs live on the beachfront a few miles east of Nome. I'm not sure what the politics are, but Howard Farley claims to be one of the Iditarod founders, although this credit is usually given to someone else whose name escapes me. Howard's role was making the trail and waypoints for the first Iditarod race, which took his team over 20 days. Today the race is run in about 9 days.

Howard Farley races his sled dog team against the tour bus. The bus was going 35 mph and could barely pace the sled team!

Howard staked his dog sled into the ground and spent a few minutes visiting with us and telling about the profession. The dogs are born to run, and it didn't take long for them to get restless and start begging to race again.

This is the kennel of another sled dog team owner. I can't remember his name, but our tour guide said he finished 30th place in the 2000 Iditarod, hurting him financially.
