An empty ring box with the ring in the distance. Perhaps returning the ring was such a shameful experience because I could dodge the "pain bullet" with everyone else and manage to make light of the situation or play it off in some small way, even Rachle and I can joke about it in the middle of a serious conversation. But the Shane Company, Direct Diamond Importers, will not be fooled by the light-hearted jest of the denied. They were not complete strangers, for they knew how dearly the ring cost me not only in dollars, but more importantly, emotional risk.
