Fat Chance... the Quest Continues!

"I just can't do this right now," Rachel said. And with that, the non-smoker author bummed a cigarette from her, lit up, took a deep puff, exhaled, said, "Your loss, space cadet," and closed the ring box. Well, that's not exactly what he said, but the sentiment was the same.

Think carefully - do you know someone who proposed marriage and was turned down? Chances are you do, perhaps more than one, but feelings of shame and rejection prevent most who have experienced such a negative traumatic experience from discussing it. I say we should never take ourselves too seriously, and my actions here backup the statement, perhaps to a fault.

Rachel refused my marriage proposal, an eventuality I had to be willing to accept when deciding to propose. Despite the answer, I don't regret proposing. My decision to propose fulfilled several purposes:

  • This woman now knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

  • Finally, finally I let my guard down and expressed true feelings without pretense.

  • Closure. By going "balls to the wall" and offering everything I wanted to offer, everything I could offer, and no less, I would know there was nothing more I could possibly do to change the situation if she said no. Nothing was left unsaid or undone, so I needn't worry about loose ends, and hanging on would be pointless.

Now, there's just one thing left to do...
