End of the Iditarod, the Last Great Race

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is held every March and starts in Anchorage (it's really Palmer) and ends here on Main Street in Nome. The sign says 1,049 miles, but it's closer to 1,000 miles; the "49" is used because Alaska is the 49th state. The Iditarod celebrates a lifesaving sled dog trek in the early 1900s from Seward to Nome to deliver medicine during a typhus outbreak in Nome in the middle of winter.
