The August, 2000 Price of Gasoline in Kotzebue

Earlier, we've covered why materials are expensive in Kotzebue. Here's another example - gasoline prices. If you noticed Kotzebue Sound in the background, it isn't exactly because the gas pump is on beachfront property. In August, 2000 when this picture was taken, the average cost of a gallon of gas in the lower 48 was between $1.40 and $1.50. I wonder how expensive it gets during the winter when Kotzebue can't be reached by sea and the subsistence hunters have to leave their trucks and ATVs running because the cold makes it hard to start the engines. Think twice and remember Kotzebue the next time you fill up at the pump and complain about how expensive gas is... then remember it's even more expensive than this in Europe!
